Here are some tips shared from one of our very own tutors, Janeah T. on how to be successful in online school:
1) Organize your time wisely
- Try working on the assignments for the week in one subject, one day at a time.
- For example, on Monday do all math assignments for the week, then on Tuesday do all science assignments for the week.
- This will help keep you focused on the content in a subject rather than making you have to constantly switch between different classes.
2) Use digital note-taking
- Instead of trying to write everything down during live CC, take screenshots
- Organize your screenshots into folders so that you can reference them easily
- Take screenshots of slides that have important information or worked example problems
3) Use online calendars for reminders
- Try setting up a calendar on your phone or email account
- Set up notifications to remind you of important due dates and events
- For example, set up a calendar notification when you have a test, project, or written assignment due
4) Set time goals
- Challenge yourself to accomplish a certain amount of work in a fixed amount of time, say 1 hour
- Dedicate your focus during this time to only that task (don't check your email or phone during this time)
- See how efficient you are in getting your work done during this focused work time. As you become more efficient, you can shorten your work time into shorter segments.
- For more information about this strategy, check out the Pomodoro Technique
5) Add color
- Try taking notes using colored pens, markers, or highlighters and unleash your creative side
- Color coding can help, for example
- Use pink for important notes
- Use blue for assignment due dates
- Use red for lock dates
- Use one color for every subject. For example, keep all Algebra notes in a green notebook and green folder. Use blue for all Biology notes, etc.
6) Create graphic organizers
- Go back over practice problems and underline or highlight important steps
- "Annotate" your work and make notes on why a certain step was used to solve a problem
- Draw lines between connecting ideas or concepts to tie them together.
Happy Studying!
